Linux Apps Get Netbook Love

 

The huge popularity of netbooks has given Linux a huge opportunity to convert more people over to Linux than ever before, and now there are plenty of potential upcoming Linux OSes built particularly for netbooks, like Moblin or Ubuntu Netbook Remix, or Google Chrome that could take on Windows 7 when it arrives.

The next step now is that software, especially user interface, is being developed with netbooks in mind. Here are a couple of recent developments:

Anjal - the new mail for netbooks.

“Anjal is a new mail UI created on top of Evolution. It would have a very interesting UI & features, that would make it the very suitable for low memory/processor/resolution devices”

Banshee Media Player

The next major version of this popular open source player for Linux gets a custom user interface called “Cubano” specifically for netbooks. They are planning to integrate F-Spot (picture viewer) too.

Anyone else spot new Linux software being developed with netbooks in mind?

I think the GIMP would benefit most from a netbook GUI revamp, that thing takes up half of a netbook display!

The operating system war is on.

You Predict the Winner of OS Wars: Chrome, Windows, Linux, OS X?

Microsoft Windows currently controls most of the globe’s desktops, with Apple gaining ground among the highbrow willing to pay for style, elegance and ease of use. Open source Linux distros dominate the world’s servers, and can be found running in user-friendly versions on a small, but not dismissible, number of desktops.

And now Google is entering the fray with Chrome OS: a lightweight, free, open source operating system designed to be fast and to support just one piece of software — a web browser.

It looks to be the first real contender against Microsoft Windows’ world domination, but the future is far from clear. Microsoft may look vulnerable, but it’s a behemoth with loyal (if not enthusiastic) users, billions in cash and a willingness to eventually catch up to faster competitors.
