Audacity® is free, open source software for recording and editing sounds. It is available for Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, GNU/Linux, and other operating systems.

The editor can record and play sound as well as import and export WAV,AIFF,MP3 and OGG files.Edit sound using cut,copy and paste features (with unlimited undo functionality).mix tracks,or apply effects to your recordings.The program also possesses a built-in amplitude-envelope editor,a customizable spectrogram made,and a frequency-analysis window for audio analyses applications.Built-in effects include bass boosts,noise removal,and the program also supports VST Plug-in Effects.

The latest release of Audacity is 1.3.7 (Beta). Because it is a work in progress and does not yet come with complete documentation or translations into foreign languages, it is recommended for more advanced users.

For all users, Audacity 1.2.6 is a stable release, complete and fully documented. You can have Audacity 1.2.6 and 1.3.7 installed on the same machine.
